TYPTI 🏸🎾
When I was recently playing pickleball (if you read my post on July 7th you know about my “pickleball problem”) a friend told me she was taking an introductory TYPTI class. I immediately perked up with the idea of trying something new. A week later I was in class and trying out this new sport.
If you are familiar with pickleball, this will look familiar and there are similarities. Someone described it to me as a combination of tennis and badminton. I have never played either seriously so I’m not sure how accurate that is.
In TYPTI, a small racket is used instead of a paddle and a large foam ball is used instead of a hard plastic wiffle ball. There are different scoring and positioning rules too but most interesting is that you can use various body parts to get the ball over the net. This last part is what caused the most laughter.
If you want to learn more about TYPTI, there is a great explanation here. You will also see that there are already tournaments underway and national player rankings. If you search for TYPTI on YouTube, you can see how this sport can be played seriously. Note: my group of players looked nothing like this:)
Much to my surprise, you can easily buy special TYPTI paddles and balls online, as shown below.
The Dabble Deets
What I liked about this Dabble: No one in my group took this very seriously and mistakes were part of the fun.
What I didn’t like or didn’t plan for: The way the scoring works, some games seemed to go on forever.
Would I do it again? Probably. TYPTI is only offered near me right now at a pickleball center that is not easy or quick for me to travel to, but I would play again.
What I will do with the results: Since this was an experience and not something with tangible results, the result was the experience of having a good time and I am happy to share that with others. I think TYPTI will be a great alternative to other racquet sports for people who have decreased mobility, and that’s a good thing:)
Thanks for reading! I’d love to hear how you are dabbling this week! Please comment below.
