I found a new food to try! I was in NYC and was picking up some food from the famous Russ and Daughters deli (they have been selling great bagels, lox, and more since 1914) when I saw something on their menu I had never heard of before. I was excited!
The website describes these as the “perfect cocktail herring with some aquavit or your favorite white wine, the richness of this small herring is brought out by a marinade of brown sugar, clove, allspice, and cranberries.” Normally I wouldn’t go for herring like this but the marinade description convinced me to try them. They were much denser than I expected (“tastes just like chicken!”) and very vinegary but overall, good!
As you can see, they are not especially appetizing. No one else in my house would try these so eventually I am going to have to eat this whole container.
Would I get them again? Probably not, especially if I was visiting Russ and Daughters again where they sell so many amazing things. If you ever go, I highly recommend the whitefish salad which was definitely the best whitefish salad I have ever had:)
PS - If you are interested in a knife skills class (I did one as part of the original 50 Things) I just found this online one coming up soon!
