One of the original 50 Things included glassblowing. I had always wanted to try it but until I wrote it down, I never did anything about it. With a little research, a friend found a place that offered a class for a few hours where we were able to learn techniques and try our hand at making a few objects.
This was really hard work! Besides being really hot and somewhat dangerous, the need to blow through a metal tube to form shapes was much harder than expected. I would definitely try this again and would even consider taking classes over a period of weeks or months. The only issue is that I don’t need (or want) any of the things I made during the original lesson or that I would make going forward. Also, the “creations” I am able to come up with are not of the quality where I would not be embarrassed to give them as gifts. So, for now, I am likely to keep trying out new things and will not be returning to glassblowing any time soon.
Have you tried glassblowing? If you have, what did you make? If you plan to try it, what would you want to create?
PS - I am working on something this week that’s a bit strange as part of my new 56 Things list. To read more about it (and maybe try it out too) check out this post by Rob Walker.
I didn't even know what glassblowing is, until now
We did not do glass blowing, but took a glass class, making paperweights. That was a company party a few years ago. The following year we took a pottery class.
