I have tried to play and like golf but it’s just not my thing. I had lessons, joined a Women’s Division, practiced regularly, and after 18 months, still was not enjoying the game, or getting any better at it. I do love soccer though, playing and watching, so when I learned about foot golf, which is like golf played with soccer balls, I made plans to find a course and try it. I recruited my ex-soccer player daughter to go with me.
Foot golf is played on a small 18-hole course and at first glance, looks like a chip and putt course. The biggest difference is that the holes are big enough to fit a soccer ball. There are still “tee boxes” (but no tees) and flags to mark the holes and of course, no clubs are needed - only the ability to kick.
What we quickly noticed is that it’s very difficult to control a soccer ball precisely enough that it rolls or lands directly in the hole. In a regular soccer game, (excluding those at the university and pro levels) soccer balls are kicked so that they end up in a general area and not a space that’s about 16” x 16”.
Although I am not skilled at golf, I think I am actually able to get a golf ball into a hole in fewer tries than it takes to get a soccer ball into a much larger hole. Foot golf was more difficult but I found it also much more fun.
P.S. - In last week’s newsletter, I mentioned my plan to include my second Hawaii-based activity on my 50 Things list in this week’s newsletter. Unfortunately, I have not had time to practice that new skill so that second activity will be coming soon!
