Like many others, our family started playing many more games during the Covid lockdowns. These were usually traditional card games like Rummy and eventually, more modern card-based games like Coup (one of our new favorites). We were never a family that played “big” complicated board games with instruction booklets the size of a short story so we thought we’d give it a try.
If you are a Board game player, you probably recognize the above game and if you do, you are probably also thinking we were crazy for picking this game to start with. (At this point, I agree - we were way in over our heads). After about an hour of trying to figure this out and growing frustration, we gave up. I listed the game, played once, on Ebay and it quickly found a better home.
This was not the end of our experiment with big board games and we did go on to try Catan, Ticket to Ride, Azul, and Villainous. The only one we regularly play is Azul, plus Coup mentioned above and another similar game called Skull.
Are you a big board game player? If so, do you have any recommendations for big games that aren’t too big like the one shown above? I’d love to hear them!

How to Make Your Own Board Games
Try a big, long, complicated board game if you are not someone who usually plays them. They can be expensive so borrow one if you are not sure you’ll like it or check to see if you can borrow board games from your local library.
